In short, anything that’s not going to place massive strain on a graphics card should work fine with Parallels Desktop, but forget about running those latest AAA titles as the experience will be beyond disappointing. Other less demanding titles such as Stardew Valley are equally at home in virtual Windows. The 2D strategy/adventure game This Is The Police runs fine, for example, which is handy as there’s no macOS version of the title. The experience is much better with less demanding games in my Steam library. You can get just-about-usable performance by dropping the graphics settings right down, but even in Parallel’s dedicated game mode, where it has almost unlimited access to the Mac’s resources, it struggles. In Windows using Parallels, it is pretty much unplayable.

The Mac version of Fortnite runs brilliantly on the MacBook Pro 16in, with super-smooth frame rates at the maximum resolution and full graphical detail. When I make a call in the Windows version of Skype, it just fires up in the background, and I can then save the interview to my Dropbox and play it back using the macOS version of VLC. For example, I use MP3 Skype Recorder to record my telephone interviews. It’s also impressive how background Windows apps continue to work in Parallels.

In other words, running the two operating systems side by side requires some re-programming of your muscle memory!

For instance, if you shake a Windows app’s window, all the other Windows apps minimize – as they do in Windows 10 – but the macOS apps remain in place. It can be confusing when you’re switching between apps to remember which has its buttons where.Īnd even in coherence mode, some Windows-specific features are retained that don’t apply to the Mac apps. Windows apps, for example, have their minimize/maximize/close buttons in the top right of the window, whereas macOS puts those in the top left. I can even assign as the default app for opening Jpeg files on the Mac and, when you right-click on images, the option to open with the Windows app appears. But running it in coherence mode, I can drag photos/screenshots into the window and make quick edits, saving them straight back to the Mac.

My favorite, quick-and-dirty photo editing app is, for example, but there is no macOS version of it. You can drag and drop files into their windows, for example, and access native macOS files and folders. Those Windows apps running in coherence mode really do act like regular macOS apps.

Indeed, if you’ve already bought the Windows license for a piece of software or game and don’t want to fork out for a new macOS version, this goes some way to offsetting the cost of Parallels/Windows itself.
